National Post – The Grim Task of Identifying the Refugees and Migrants who Don’t Reach Europe

“In some of these countries, it’s hard enough to find resources to devote to the living migrants, let alone the dead,” said Frank Laczko, head of the Global Migration Data Analysis Center at the International Organization for Migration (IOM). IOM is trying to strengthen programs to identify the dead and track down their families. But for now it’s mostly an ad hoc process. In Italy, a government forensics team based in Sicily compiles fingerprints, dental information and DNA samples. In Tunisia, Doctors Without Borders has offered a course in “dead body management

The Guardian – Germany to Push for Compulsory EU Quotas to Tackle Refugee Crisis

Germany is to push for more ambitious and extensive common European Union policies on the refugee crisis, according to policymakers in Berlin, with compulsory and permanent quotas for sharing the distribution of probably hundreds of thousands of people who will arrive directly from the Middle East. Also on Berlin’s agenda are new European powers replacing some national authority over border control, and the possible raising of a special EU-wide levy to fund the policies.

Global News – Tima Kurdi, Aunt of Drowned Syrian Refugee Boy, Says Changes to Refugee Rules Too Late

Tima Kurdi’s application to bring her brother Mohammed Kurdi and his family to Canada was rejected because it didn’t have the necessary paperwork. Kurdi said an official with Citizenship and Immigration Canada contacted her last week and asked that she reapply for Mohammed. The government is no longer asking for the difficult-to-obtain United Nations documents needed to satisfy requirements to qualify as a refugee, she said. But Kurdi said the policy change comes too late to save the wife and two children of her other brother, Abdullah Kurdi. The trio drowned while making the treacherous water crossing from Turkey to Greece.

CBC – Appeal Case Against Federal Health for Refugees Adjourned

Lawyers and doctors fighting government cuts to refugee health care say they hope they’re one step closer to the reinstatement of federal health coverage for all refugee claimants. Lawyers representing the government and those representing doctors and refugees were supposed to be back in appeal court on Oct. 26, but the case has been adjourned, for now. […] Michael Bossin, an Ottawa lawyer representing Amnesty International in the case, said the Liberals campaigned to reinstate the refugee health coverage.
