Le commissaire à la langue française, Benoît Dubreuil, affirme que « l’heure n’est plus aux petits projets pilotes au financement incertain » pour assurer l’intégration des immigrants au Québec. Dans un tout nouveau rapport, il propose de créer un « parcours d’intégration obligatoire », incluant des activités de jumelage entre francophones et immigrants, pour ceux qui souhaitent obtenir la résidence permanente. Il propose aussi d’augmenter la mixité dans les écoles.

Un économiste soutient que l’engagement renouvelé des libéraux fédéraux à réduire l’immigration au cours des prochaines années pèsera sur la croissance économique du Canada. Le budget fédéral déposé la semaine dernière a réaffirmé l’objectif de ramener la part des résidents temporaires au Canada à 5 % de la population totale – contre environ 7,5 % à la fin de 2024 –, mais a repoussé l’échéance à 2027. Ce plan prévoit l’admission de 385 000 résidents temporaires – travailleurs et étudiants – en 2026, puis de 370 000 au cours des deux années suivantes.

The Carney government’s first budget will significantly reduce the number of temporary immigrants it admits to Canada over the next three years. The cuts are being made to the temporary foreign worker program and the international student program. The 2026 target for temporary foreign worker (TFW) arrivals is now 60,000, down from the 82,000 the government announced last year, and the international student target is now 150,000, down from 305,900.

The Annual Report to Parliament on Immigration serves as an important tool to inform Parliament and Canadians about key admission highlights and data on immigration in Canada. Its tabling in Parliament is mandated by the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA). This year, the Annual Report places renewed focus on the reporting requirements outlined in section 94 of IRPA. Reflecting this focus, the Report has been restructured to spotlight key data tables, year-over-year comparisons, and metrics central to immigration planning and accountability.

Montreal’s Concordia University says it’s not renewing some teaching contracts and deferring previously approved sabbaticals because of major budget shortfalls due in part to federal and provincial immigration policies. The university is also offering full-time faculty voluntary retirement packages, part of a suite of cost-cutting measures president Graham Carr announced earlier this week to help the school’s finances recover.
