Windsor Star – Housing in SHort Supply for Syrian Refugees En Route to Windsor

Windsor might have a very healthy residential vacancy rate, but the city is having a difficult time finding the right kind of housing for an expected flood of Syrian refugees expected at its doorstep in the coming weeks. “We are struggling,” said Kelly Goz, Windsor’s co-ordinator of housing administration and development. The biggest challenge in preparing for the hundreds of anticipated arrivals over the next three months is finding an adequate supply of appropriate housing, she said.

The Peterborough Examiner – New Immigrant Integration Plan Revealed by Peterborough Immigration Partnership

Economic success and social inclusion are the main pillars of a new plan revealed Wednesday to help make the city and area more welcoming for newcomers. The community immigrant integration plan released Wednesday by the Peterborough Immigration Partnership “articulates the goals that need to be met to achieve the vision and mandate” of the group, chairman Andy Cragg told those gathered for the release.

CBC – Canada’s Border Agents Armed with New Information to Screen Visitors

Canadian front-line border agents now have access to more information on travellers contained in Canada’s law enforcement database, a significant change in the way visitors are checked for potential security risks, CBC News has learned. Until now, front-line border agents did not have access to information contained in the Canadian Police Information Centre database when checking the backgrounds of the millions of travellers who arrive at Canada’s border crossings every month.

CBC – Small Canadian Towns Opening Their Doors to Syrian Refugees

Concern for the plight of Syrian migrants appears to be mobilizing rural Canada, with residents in small communities across the country raising their hands and offering to help settle thousands of refugees. On Thursday, federal immigration department officials said more than 65 Canadian towns outside of Quebec, which has a separate immigration system, are now prepared to welcome displaced Syrians.

L’Actualité – Le gouvernement Couillard veut adapter l’immigration au marché de l’emploi

La ministre de l’Immigration, Kathleen Weil, a réaffirmé mercredi son ambition d’arrimer l’immigration aux besoins du marché du travail, sans toutefois dévoiler toutes les facettes de sa stratégie. Elle a déposé un projet de loi en ce sens à l’Assemblée nationale, ce qui, selon elle, constitue le «premier jalon» de sa «vaste réforme» déjà annoncée et qui pourrait entrer en vigueur dans les «premiers mois» de 2017.
