The head of the International Organization for Migration praised Canada’s welcoming stance toward refugees at a time of growing xenophobia in Europe and the United States, as he offered new details about the Liberal government’s plan to airlift thousands of Syrian asylum-seekers into the country in the coming months. In Ottawa for meetings with top immigration officials on Tuesday, IOM director-general William Lacy Swing applauded the government’s pledge to bring in 25,000 Syrian refugees by the end of February.

More than 100 British Columbia lawyers have volunteered to help members of the public navigate the refugee sponsorship process, a complex system in which minor errors can derail an application. The lawyers have signed up for the pro-bono work through the Refugee Sponsorship Support Program, a University of Ottawa venture that aims to connect those who want to sponsor refugees with legal experts.

Manitobans got their first look Tuesday at the new Syrian refugee command centre set up in Winnipeg. The centre is set up at 405 Broadway and will oversee an influx of as many as 2,000 privately and government-sponsored refugees in the coming months.
CBC – Quebec Businesses Urged to Hire Syrian Refugees
The Quebec government is encouraging businesses to take advantage of an existing subsidy program and put Syrian refugees to work. Representatives of Quebec’s business community joined Labour Minister Sam Hamad and Immigration Minister Kathleen Weil Tuesday in a joint appeal to the province’s employers. Hamad, himself an immigrant from Syria, said employment is the best way to help the refugees integrate into Quebec society.
