Montreal Gazette – Housing is First Piece of the Puzzle in Welcoming Syrian Refugees

The first planeload of refugees, expected to arrive Saturday from Jordan at Trudeau airport, will be all privately-sponsored refugees — the responsibility of family members, faith groups or individuals who have stepped up to help them — with one government-assisted refugee transiting through Montreal to another city in Canada. Aghasi, the director of the Centre social d’aide aux immigrants — the one organization in Montreal that is mandated to help government-assisted refugees (GARs) — has been told she may only get 48 hours notice before her new clients arrive.

CTV News – SCC says Tamil Refugee Claimant Deserves Second Chance

The Supreme Court of Canada has ruled that a Tamil teenager who fled the violent aftermath of Sri Lanka’s 27-year civil war should have his refugee application reconsidered on humanitarian grounds. By a 5-2 margin, the high court on Thursday reversed a decision by the Federal Court of Appeal that upheld the rejection of Jeyakannan Kanthasamy’s claim that he would suffer serious hardship if he returned to his homeland.

Blackburn News – Province Tops up Refugee Supports

London’s Cross Cultural Learner Centre is among eight organizations that are getting top-up funding from the province to help resettle Syrian refugees. Organizations in six Ontario cities will share another $3.7-million to support first-language settlement services, trauma counselling and mental health services, housing assistance and employment supports.

The Atlantic – Canada Returns to Airlifting Refugees

The first planeload of Syrian refugees arrived late Thursday in Toronto where they were welcomed by Justin Trudeau, the Canadian prime minister, and members of his Cabinet. “We really would like to thank you for all this hospitality and the warm welcome and all the staff—we felt ourselves at home and we felt ourselves highly respected,” said Kevork Jamkossian, who was among the first to emerge from the plane with his wife and their daughter, Madeleine.
