Even as students and faculty on university campuses cope with busy exam and end-of-term schedules, they are finding the time to raise money, organize crowdfunding campaigns and offer tutoring services to Syrian refugees hoping to study in Canada. Some of these efforts are offered by benefactors with deep pockets — but much of it is about students and staff pooling their more meagre resources to offer assistance during a humanitarian crisis.

But Immigration officials in Canada say they are doing everything possible to ease the integration of thousands of displaced families into communities where they will have the support of resettlement agencies and ordinary Canadians who are giving their money and their time to make the transition work.
Belet Younadam and her three young daughters went from the front lines of the war against the Islamic State in the Syrian town of Tal Tamr in early 2014 to the poverty line in Beirut. On Saturday night, their desperate journey to flee war and find safety ended in a lineup inside an airport warehouse in Montreal.

A recent report for Pathways to Prosperity (P2P), conducted by researchers at Dalhousie and Saint Mary’s universities in partnership with the Immigrant Services Association of Nova Scotia (ISANS), suggests that immigrants do well in Nova Scotia. Findings look at the economic outcomes of immigrants by landing category and cohort from 1990 to 2012, the last year with available information.
