CBC – Syrian Refugee Family Arrives in Halifax to Welcoming Party and Politicians

A throng of well-wishers gathered at Halifax’s airport Wednesday and shared smiles and tears as a privately-sponsored Syrian family stepped off a plane from Toronto and into view in the arrivals area. The Al Habash family, sponsored by a refugee committee from Saint Benedict’s Catholic Church, has been living in Lebanon for the last two years after they were displaced by conflict in Syria’s capital of Damascus.

The Hamilton Spectator – Pace of Refugee Flights Increasing as Canada Aims for 10,000 Goal

The next planeload of Syrian refugees is set to arrive on Friday and the pace is then expected to pick up to an average of two planes a day between now and the end of the year. The Friday plane will mainly carry government-sponsored refugees. The government will be able to provide an updated arrival schedule next week, Immigration Minister John McCallum said Wednesday.

Global News – Canada Putting Aside Refugee Applications that Cause “Concerns”

The federal government is setting aside a number of refugee applications due to unspecified “concerns,” officials said Wednesday morning. Those cases will be put on hold until after the current surge of refugees have been processed and the applicant can be interviewed again. The government officials, speaking on background, emphasized that the delayed applications did not necessarily represent security concerns.

CP24 – Landlords Unwilling to Offer Apartments to Privately-Sponsored Syrian Refugees, Volunteers Say

Volunteers helping newly-arrived, privately sponsored refugees find housing say landlords are refusing to approve refugee families for apartments because they understandably do not have jobs, bank accounts or credit histories. At the Armenian Community Centre of Toronto on Wednesday, Angelique Astourian-Kirijian said some landlords are under the impression that privately-sponsored refugees will receive monthly payments from the federal government.
