Canada is the only country in the world with a formal, private sponsorship program for refugees, but in recent years, under the previous Conservative government, the Canadian Council for Refugees worried the system was headed towards a refugee resettlement system that would be government run, but privately funded.

Ottawa Citizen – Ontario will Provide $1.3 Million to Help Syrian Refugees Settling in Ottawa

The Ontario government will contribute $1.3 million to three Ottawa groups that are helping the Syrian refugees who have begun to arrive in town. The money announced Monday is part of a pot of $8.5 million the province had promised over the next 2 1/2 years for refugee settlement and sponsorship.

CTV News – Canada Aims to Double Intake of Syrian Refugees to 50,000: McCallum

Canada’s new Liberal government is pushing forward with its pledge to resettle 25,000 Syrian refugees by the end of February. McCallum says Canada hopes to settle 35,000 to 50,000 Syrian refugees by the end of 2016, with the UN refugee agency, the Jordanian government and the International Organization for Migration assisting with the vetting process.
