When nutritionist Ala’a Eideh volunteers as an instructor in an Arabic nutrition and cooking class that starts next month, she’ll be teaching newcomers from places such as Syria — a place with a cuisine she knows well and loves. “Giving a cooking class in Arabic for newcomers — especially Syrians — is exciting,” said the international student doing a doctorate in nutrition at the University of Manitoba.

Toronto Star – Refugee Board Told Gay-Bash Victim St. Kitts can Protect Him

The back and side of Rolston Ryan’s body still bear the marks of the stabbings in two gay bashing attacks that he suffered in St. Kitts. […] Despite the scars of his stab wounds — and acknowledgement that he would “face a serious possibility of persecution” as a gay man if he returned to his homeland — the Immigration and Refugee Board denied Ryan’s refugee claim because, in refugee judge Brenda Lloyd’s own words, “the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis provides adequate protection to its citizens.”

CBC – Edmonton’s Eritrean Community Worries Other Refugees Being Ignored

A United Nations inquiry in June reported human rights violations in Eritrea. The report said many people there are subjected to forced labour or imprisonment under a totalitarian state. Hundreds of thousands of refugees have fled the country. Zedingle Ghebremusse of the Edmonton Eritrean Association said he applauds Canadian efforts to help Syrian refugees. But he worries Eritreans risk being ignored as a result.

CBC – Health Clinics to Offer Check-Ups to Syrian Refugees Upon Arrival

The former Royal Victoria Hospital will be one of twenty-five special Syrian refugee health clinics across Quebec. […] Refugees will visit a clinic about 72 hours after they arrive. Thirteen refugee health clinics are situated in Montreal, dedicated to providing a check-up they land and other health care needs such as readapting, immunizations and counseling.
