CBC – Roofs 4 Refugees Launched to Find Affordable Housing for Newcomers

A group of Ottawans has created a website to match refugees with property owners who have affordable housing to offer. Roofs 4 Refugees launched Friday and is a partnership between the group, Refugee 613 and the Catholic Centre for Immigrants. The priority is to find housing to accommodate families of five, ideally for no less than a year, the team behind the website told CBC Radio’s Ottawa Morning on Friday.

Chronicle Herald – Employers Face More Inspections and New Penalties Under New Temporary Foreign Worker Regime

As of Dec. 1, 2015, the new Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP) and the International Mobility Program (IMP) regulations took effect. This new regime makes compliance inspections easier and creates new penalties for non-compliance. Employers using the Programs need to comply — and be ready to prove that they did. The federal departments of Citizenship and Immigration Canada and Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) will implement the new regime. It’s now easier for ESDC to inspect employers for Program compliance: it has authority to conduct random inspections and has committed to inspecting one in four employers of foreign nationals through the Program. There are also new penalties applicable to employers of foreign nationals employed under either Program and to Canadians hiring foreign caregivers.

CBC – Millionaire Immigrant Investor Program Lures Only 7 Instead of 60

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s pitch to convince the world’s richest that Canada is a good place to invest came too late for a pilot program intended to lure 60 millionaire immigrants to Canada in an effort to give the economy a boost, CBC News has learned. […] The Immigrant Investor Venture Capital program, a revamped version of a program critics once denounced as “cash for citizenship,” was launched last January by the former Conservative government following a commitment it made in the 2014 budget.

Global News – Refugees Out-Earn Millionaire “Business-Class” Immigrants Years After Arriving in Canada

Statistics Canada data analyzed by Global News shows how swiftly refugees and immigrants start working and earning once they become permanent residents. The figures also indicate the way your entry to Canada can influence your financial trajectory afterward. Within five years, 57 per cent of government-assisted refugees, 65 per cent of refugees who claim asylum once they’re in Canada and 70 per cent of privately sponsored refugees reported employment income (the figure for all Canadians in 2013 was about 73 per cent). And the percentage of refugees earning employment income rises the longer they’re in Canada.

Metro News Canada – International Students Eye Top-Notch Education “at a Reduced Price” in Canada

Hundreds of thousands of international students flock to Canadian univesities each year. But prospective students from the U.S. may find Canadian schools even more enticing this year thanks to the low loonie. That’s good news for Canada’s universities and local economies, but it could make it more difficult for Canadian applicants to get acceptance letters from some schools. “A lower Canadian dollar does mean (some international students) can get a university education that’s among the world’s best at a reduced price,” said Richard Levin, the University of Toronto’s executive director of enrolment services and university registrar.
