The Globe and Mail – What Distinguishes the Syrians Arriving in Canada from those Reaching Europe?

Statistics compiled by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees show 57 per cent of the just over one million people who have arrived on the islands of either Greece or Italy since the start of last year were adult males, versus 17 per cent women and 27 per cent children. Strip out the under 18s, and 77 per cent of the adults who made “irregular entries” to Europe were men (compared with 66 per cent in 2012, before the refugee crisis began in earnest).

The Chronicle Journal – Teachers to Get Help to Welcome Refugees

The Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario is hosting workshops for elementary teachers across the province to help them meet the needs of Syrian and other refugee children arriving in smaller centres and rural areas. “We have a number of locals outside of major cities where school boards may have no experience or infrastructure in place to welcome these children from refugee situations into the elementary school system,” ETFO president Sam Hammond said this week. “Our goal is to assist ETFO members to work with all students to create a welcoming classroom environment and to identify and support the learning needs of these newcomers.”

CBC – Deported Roma Have Little Chance of Return Despite Disciplinary Rulings Against Their Lawyers

Refugee advocates are trying to reopen the cases of hundreds of Roma families who were denied refugee status in Canada after being bilked by their lawyers. The three Ontario lawyers handled thousands of claims from Roma families between 2008 and 2012 and collected hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal aid fees, but only a small percentage of their clients were ever accepted as refugees. In the case of two of the lawyers, both of whom have since been disciplined by the Law Society of Upper Canada, only one per cent of their Roma refugee claims were accepted while other lawyers handling Roma cases had average acceptance rates of around 10 per cent, with some as high as 30 per cent.
