A Canada-U.S. initiative to create new, cross-border, law-enforcement teams has been “postponed” due to unresolved concerns about how to treat police officers accused of breaking the law. The so-called next-generation border project has been put off as discussions continue with U.S. officials — almost four years after pilot projects were supposed to begin, said Staff Sgt. Julie Gagnon, a force spokeswoman.

The Immigrant and Multicultural Services Society is looking to add to the network of organizations involved in the Local Immigration Partnership project now in its second year. “We’re looking for any individual, business or community group that wants to learn about the resources and support available for integrating immigrants and newcomers into their organization,” said Laurie Dillman, employment counsellor at the Immigrant and Multicultural Services Society. This is a resource sharing group and the model is used in many communities throughout Canada, which is funded by the federal government, Dillman added.

“We’ve been hearing it for a long time from our members across the country,” said Janet Dench, executive director of the Canadian Council for Refugees. “There’s been a kind of favouring of Syrians against other refugees.” Critics say the bias extends from government policy to media coverage to aid from members of the public. Ms. Dench noted a program at Montreal’s Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec to give Syrian refugees tours of the enormous public library. “It sounded like a great program,” she said, “but, eep, why only Syrian?”
