The European Union sealed a controversial deal with Turkey on Friday intended to halt illegal migration flows to Europe in return for financial and political rewards for Ankara. The accord aims to close the main route by which a million migrants and refugees poured across the Aegean Sea to Greece in the last year before marching north to Germany and Sweden.

CBC – Fredericton Group Forms to Make Life Easier for Immigrants and Refugees

Immigrants and refugees arriving in Fredericton will soon have more services available to help them transition to life in New Brunswick’s capital city. The Local Immigration Partnership will be launched on Monday and will bring groups together to determine what services are missing for newcomers.

Reuters Canada – Germany’s Merkel Sees Uptick in Approval for Refugee Policy as Influx Slows

Popular support for German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s policy on migrants rose to a slim majority this month, a poll showed on Friday, as a huge influx of asylum-seekers seen in 2015 has slowed to a trickle. The survey for public broadcaster ZDF suggested that for the first time since December, the majority of Germans – 55 percent – think their country can handle the number of migrants arriving, indicating that a public backlash which had appeared to threaten Merkel’s re-election chances next year was easing.

Global News – New Brunswick Nears Syrian Refugee Commitment, Ready to Welcome More

The Saint John Regional YMCA has been a leading force when it comes to the Syrian refugee resettlement effort. Over the past few months 378 refugees — 81 families — have come to call the port city of Saint John home, more than any other centre in the province. In fact there have been some Syrian families that have specifically requested to be placed in Saint John.
