The Guardian (UK) – Canada to Accept Additional 10,000 Refugees

Canada will take in an additional 10,000 Syrian refugees, adding to the more than 25,000 already received in the last few months, said immigration minister John McCallum. McCallum told the Canadian Broadcasting Corp he was responding to complaints from Canadian groups who want to sponsor Syrian refugees but did not have their applications processed quickly enough to be among the government’s initial target of 25,000.

The Georgia Straight – Vancouver City Council to Receive “Sanctuary City” Policies Aimed to Ensure Access without Fear

Vancouver’s “sanctuary city” movement finally has something down on paper. On April 6, city council is scheduled to receive a long-awaited plan designed to ensure that immigrants do not have to worry that registering their children for swimming lessons, for example, or calling for an ambulance could result in a member of their family being deported from the country. Originally dubbed “sanctuary city” but since renamed “access without fear”, the framework is a product of the mayor’s working group on immigration.

Georgia Straight – Immigration Activists Seek Accountability for Border Cops

This morning (March 31), immigration activists held a teleconference to discuss oversights allegedly committed by the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA). The discussion came in the wake of two recent deaths of immigration detainees and the detention in isolation of a 16-year-old Syrian boy earlier this year, all in Ontario. Loly Rico, president of the Canadian Council for Refugees (CCR), said the CCR has proposed a model for a complaint mechanism, suggesting it needs to be independent—i.e., not subject to departmental or political influence—and external, meaning organizationally and physically outside the CBSA.

The Globe and Mail – International Student Work Program Creating Low-Wage Work Force: Report

A program that allows international students to work in Canada after graduation is creating a low-wage work force, encouraging low-quality postsecondary programs, and needs to be redesigned, says an internal report from Citizenship and Immigration Canada Under the Post-Graduation Work Permit Program international students with degrees from Canadian colleges and universities can work here for up to three years after their programs end. Between 50 per cent and 60 per cent of eligible international students applied for a work permit, the report says, with more than 70,000 people holding permits in 2014.

The Globe and Mail – Express Entry Program Skewed Too Heavily Toward In-Demand Jobs: Critics

Almost 80 per cent of the people who were invited to apply for permanent residence through Express Entry were already in Canada, the government said in its year-end report on the new immigration system, released on Thursday. Slightly more than 31,000 invitations were issued in 2015, a number that will grow in coming years as Express Entry becomes the main pathway for economic immigrants.
