It seems many of Surrey’s Syrian refugees are finding living in the one of the country’s most unaffordable places is just not possible on the amount they’ve been given. Over 100 families are now clients of the Surrey Food Bank. Executive Director Marilyn Hermann says that number is climbing.

The City of Ottawa is trying to figure out how to handle a potentially overwhelming demand in 2017 for affordable housing and other community supports among government-sponsored Syrian refugees as some transition to social assistance. Government-sponsored refugees will lose their monthly federal allowances after being in Canada for one year, and it’s been estimated that by 2017 as many as 40 per cent could end up on Ontario’s social assistance program.

Traditionally, a year is not a long wait for a refugee who wants to come to Canada. The posted wait time for someone applying from Kenya is 75 months. But, instead of asking why the Syrian refugees are getting special treatment, shouldn’t we demand all refugees be processed faster, particularly when they have furnished homes and eager friends waiting here for them? Being equally cruel is not the answer. The response of Canadian citizens to the biggest refugee crisis since the Second World War is a chance to reset the bar on what it means to be truly compassionate.

A New Westminster non-profit group is spearheading a new pilot program to support HIV-positive immigrants by finding them legal and medical help along with navigating immigration and refugee claims. Finding out you are HIV positive is devastating news for anyone, but the Lower Mainland Purpose Society says recent immigrants can struggle with the diagnosis more than others.
