A Brazilian family, residents of Calgary for more than five years, continues to await a change of heart from Immigration Canada on the application of their 10-year-old son who has cerebral palsy and remains in Brazil. Jaime Bastos, a critical care physician, says his son Gabriel’s application was denied as the disability was considered a potential burden on Canada’s health care system.

Immigration officials are looking at revoking the Canadian citizenship of about a dozen people after the auditor general found the government isn’t doing enough to root out fraud in the citizenship system. Michael Ferguson’s report uncovered instances of people with serious criminal records and others using potentially phoney addresses among those who managed to secure Canadian citizenship thanks to holes throughout not just the Immigration Department but the RCMP and Canada Border Services Agency as well.
Toronto Star – Britain Makes U-Turn on Accepting Syrian Refugee Children from Europe
Britain’s government bowed to pressure Wednesday and agreed to take in some unaccompanied children from Syria who have made their way to Europe. Prime Minister David Cameron’s office said children who registered in Greece, Italy or France before March 20 — when the European Union struck a deal to return many migrants to Turkey— would be eligible to come to the U.K. It did not specify how many Britain would accept.

“There are four really important responses to C-51. The first one, and the flagship commitment that we made: establish a committee of Parliamentarians to provide a new dimension in review and scrutiny that we have not had before. Other countries have had this, all of the Five Eyes countries have a parliamentary mechanism. Most of the democracies in the Western world have that kind of a mechanism. Canada has been the anomaly. So that legislation is being drafted now, and we hope to have that in the public domain by the time Parliament rises for the summer.”
