CBC – Federal Government Reviewing Immigration Detention Process After String of Deaths

The Canadian government said it “can and must do better” when it comes to taking care of immigration detainees after Toronto refugee advocates repeated warnings that sick and mentally ill detainees are often held in provincial jails.  Two men held by the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) died in two separate incidents in Ontario this spring, while a 24-year-old man detainee died at the Edmonton Remand Centre on Saturday.

Reuters Canada – Australia Reaffirms Hard-Line Immigration Policy

Australia on Saturday defended its hardline immigration policy after two asylum-seeker deaths, weeks of protests and several medical evacuations from a camp in the tiny Pacific Island nation of Nauru. Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said Australia’s policy of refusing to accept asylum seekers who arrived by boat was necessary to deter people smugglers from organizing dangerous sea voyages.

For people with inquiries about immigration applications, the 300 call centre agents in Montreal are the only channel of live communication to address their concerns as the department moves towards a paperless online operation. But those with case-specific problems say they find the service unhelpful to say the least. The call centre is at the forefront of customer service at the 5,000-employee department while immigration applicants count on these call centre agents for guidance and information, though those with case-specific problems say they find their assistance unhelpful to say the least.

CBC – Multicultural Festival Cancellation in Halifax Still a Mystery to Culture Minister

Nova Scotia’s Minister of Communities, Culture and Heritage said he’s surprised this year’s Multicultural Festival isn’t going ahead. While organizers still aren’t speaking five days after CBC News reported the cancellation, Tony Ince said the province held back some funding this year because some financial documents weren’t supplied.

CBC – Previously Deported Nigerian Student Looks Forward to Convocation in Regina

Earning a university degree is no easy feat, but Victoria Ordu is especially proud to convocate this spring, after her studies became the subject of national news. She spent time in hiding and was eventually deported during the time she was planning to work on her degree. […] The international student first arrived at University of Regina from Nigeria in 2009. In 2011, she and another Nigerian student, Favour Amadi, worked a couple of weeks at a Wal-Mart store off-campus before learning their student visas didn’t allow it.
