The federal government’s decision to freeze the cap on the number of temporary foreign workers businesses can hire at 20 per cent of their workforce is being welcomed, cautiously, by Alberta businesses that face labour shortages in spite of the economic downturn. The announcement Thursday came a week before a rule limiting businesses to having TFWs as no more than 10 per cent of their workforce was to go into effect July 1.
A “blitz” intended to hasten the arrival of privately sponsored Syrian refugees amid complaints from Canadians exasperated with long delays, ended last Friday with thousands of arrivals still months away. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada said it was sending over 40 additional staff to the Middle East on May 9 to finalize applications for privately sponsored refugees for a period of seven weeks. The staffing boost was not extended as some private sponsors had hoped, instead it ended a week earlier than expected.

La Conférence ministérielle sur la francophonie canadienne s’est conclue jeudi matin à Saint-Jean, à Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador, sur une note optimiste quant à l’avenir de la francophonie. La rencontre aura surtout permis aux représentants provinciaux de partager des idées sur des dossiers communs.
