Global News – Detainee’s Hunger Strike in Lindsay, Ont., Jail Down to Two Holdouts, Officials Say

A hunger strike by immigration detainees jailed in Lindsay, Ont. has passed the two-week mark, but only two inmates are participating out of an original 55, corrections officials say. The statement could not be independently verified. Supporters said that 68 detainees were participating in the hunger strike when it began on July 11. Due to lockdowns, however, they no longer have their own estimate of how many are involved.

Even before Turkey was thrown into crisis by a coup attempt, its deal with the European Union to stop migration westward was under strain: Turks did not get the visa-free travel they were promised, and Greece was overwhelmed with asylum claims that have halted deportations for weeks. Now critics of the agreement argue Turkey is even more unsafe, and warn the arrangement might collapse altogether — heightening anxiety in neighbouring Greece, the main gateway for migrants into the EU.

Radio-Canada – La mosquée de Moncton en pleine croissance avec l’arrivée des Syriens

La seule mosquée à Moncton doit encore agrandir ses espaces pour accueillir le flot de réfugiés syriens qui se sont installés en ville récemment. Selon Riaz Akhtar, trésorier de l’Association musulmane de Moncton, la congrégation a doublé au cours des six derniers mois. Environ 200 personnes vont à la mosquée chaque vendredi.

CBC – Afghan-Canadian Group Aims to Bring International Students to Atlantic Canada

A group of Afghan-Canadians in Halifax are fundraising to try to offer a young student from Afghanistan a better quality of education at an Atlantic Canadian university. Neptune Azimi, president of the Canadian Afghan Association of Atlantic Canada, estimates there are about 60 families from Afghanistan in the Halifax area. […] Azimi and three others will examine the education system in Afghanistan and try to find students who are interested in applying to Atlantic Canada to study.
