Brampton Guardian – Newcomer Tweens at Higher Risk of Drowning, says Report by Lifesaving Society

Newcomer tweens – those 11 to 14 years – are five times less likely to know how to swim than those born in the Canada, according to a study commissioned by Lifesaving Society. Also, despite not knowing how to swim or any aspects of water safety, 93 per cent of the new Canadian youth polled said they planned on taking part in activities in and around water.

CBC – UPEI Attracting More International Students

UPEI is seeing an increase in the number of international students this semester. About 800 have already registered, with more to come, according to manager of enrollment at UPEI Jerry Wang. There were about 730 enrolled last year. […] Many of UPEI’s international students come from Nigeria, China and the U.S. Wang said they choose UPEI because of they feel the Island is a safe place to live and they like the smaller class sizes.

CBC – Soldiers of Odin, Dubbed “Extreme Anti-Refugee Group,” Patrol Edmonton Streets

The Soldiers of Odin, a European organization that has been dubbed “an extreme anti-refugee group” by the Anti-Defamation League, has begun setting up shop in Canada — but local leaders say they’re not affiliated with white power.  After sparking controversy in Hamilton, Ont., earlier this summer, the group has formed a chapter in Edmonton.

Reuters Canada – Defiant Merkel says Refugees Not Taking Away Benefits from Germans

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, whose conservative party faces possible defeat in an election in her home state on Sunday, rejected charges by anti-immigrant critics that her government was spending less on Germans due to a large influx of refugees. In an interview published in Saturday’s edition of Bild newspaper, Merkel also strongly defended her decision, one year ago this weekend, to open the door to hundreds of thousands of refugees mostly fleeing conflicts in the Middle East.

Conservative leadership candidate Kellie Leitch is defending a contentious survey question from her campaign team that asked supporters what they think about vetting would-be immigrants and refugees for “anti-Canadian values.” The survey made headlines on Thursday, with at least one Conservative strategist calling for her to withdraw from the race. […] During the 2015 federal election campaign, Leitch helped promote a controversial Conservative promise to establish a tip line for so-called “barbaric cultural practices,” aimed at helping the RCMP enforce a law aimed at cracking down on forced marriages and keeping polygamists out of Canada.
