Calgary Herald – Little Syria: Calgarians Mobilized to Help Arriving Syrians
The Syrian Refugees Support Group Calgary (SRSG) served as something of an umbrella for a wide variety of volunteer efforts related to the Syrian newcomers. Founded by Saima Jamal and Sam Nammoura, a pair of community activists, SRSG’s most important early role was facilitating community donations by storing furniture, clothes and other items in a warehouse and distributing them as needed. The program, now in its third year, accepts a total of 17 students each year.

Immigration Minister John McCallum acknowledges not everyone in the Liberal caucus is as enthusiastic as he is in welcoming more immigrants and refugees to Canada over the next three years. “If you spend more money bringing in more immigrants you have less money for other things. That’s one factor” […] McCallum said some of the internal rumblings are also about how to sell Canadians on the idea that more immigration is good for the country.
The Guardian – Ignore the Naysayers. America Can Handle 110,000 More Refugees
Barack Obama’s announcement that the United States proposes to admit 110,000 refugees over the course of the next year has elicited a furious reaction from some Republican leaders. This was predictable. […] Up to now, the United States has admitted a few more than 10,000. So far, at least, their resettlement in the United States has seemed to go very well, though Indiana Governor Mike Pence, Donald Trump’s running mate, has tried to keep them out of his state.
