CTV News – Monsef Case Unlikely to be Reviewed, Immigration Lawyer Says

After Canada’s minister of democratic institutions confirmed Thursday that she was actually born in Iran and not Afghanistan, an immigration lawyer says stories such as that of Maryam Monsef are “extremely common” and says a review is unlikely. […] Immigration lawyer, Lorne Waldman, told CTV’s Your Morning on Friday that Monsef’s case is “extremely common” among refugees moving to Canada. […] “It happens for different reasons,” he said. “It happens because parents are trying to protect their children. It happens because parents are desperate and they’re given bad advice and they misrepresent facts on applications in order to bring their families to safety.”

The Globe and Mail – Canadians’ Views at Odds with Liberal Immigration Plans, Government Poll Shows

The federal government’s own internal polling contradicts the Immigration Minister’s claim that Canadians are clamouring for increased immigration. John McCallum told reporters last week that “almost all” of the Canadians he met with during consultations this summer told him to boost Canada’s immigration targets. However internal polling conducted by Mr. McCallum’s department found Canadians are just fine with the current targets, even though most people had no idea how many immigrants currently come to Canada each year.

The Guardian – Canada Detains Hundreds of Children for Immigration Violations, Report Finds

Canada regularly detains hundreds of children who have run afoul of the country’s immigration laws – including some who are held in correctional facilities and even in solitary confinement, according to a new report calling for sweeping reforms to the practice. Between 2010 and 2014, an average of 242 children were detained across Canada over immigration violations, according to the International Human Rights Program at the University of Toronto.
