L’Actualité – Le nombre record d’immigrants fait bondir la population canadienne de 1.2%

L’arrivée d’un nombre record d’immigrants au cours de la dernière année a fait grimper la population canadienne à 36 286 425 personnes, selon les nouvelles données dévoilées par Statistiques Canada, mercredi. Ce total, mesuré le 1er juillet dernier, représente une hausse de 437 815 habitants, soit 1,2 pour cent, durant la période 2015-2016.

Le test actuellement demandé par le ministère de l’Immigration, des Réfugiés et de la Citoyenneté a été critiqué par des immigrants et le Commissaire aux langues officielles puisqu’il coûte jusqu’à 200 $ […].

Times Colonist – Students Lament Lack of Housing, Province Considers Financing Pitch

Post-secondary students rallying at the B.C. legislature on Tuesday called on the province to help fill what they say is a 20,000-bed shortfall in student housing. […] Students say the tight rental market and increasing numbers of local and international students have led to a rental housing “crisis” situation on Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland. […] Camosun College’s Joan Yates, vice-president of student experience, said the school is exploring the idea of building housing for families, aboriginal students and international students. […] The college was forced to issue a plea to the community, staff and former homestays to find enough places for international students this term.

The Peterborough Examiner – Rally Held in Cobourg for Migrants’ Rights

A round-table discussion and forum on migrant workers’ rights Tuesday evening topped off a march and rally from the local MP’s constituency office into downtown Cobourg earlier in the afternoon. The round table event, co-sponsored by the Northumberland Community Legal Centre and Horizons of Friendship, comes on the heels of about 75 recommendations being made last week to the federal committee reviewing the Temporary Foreign Workers program, and an on-going review of the provincial Employment Standards Act.

The Guardian – Canadians are Embracing Syrian Refugees. Why Can’t We?

This is a country where politicians tried to outbid one another during the last federal election with pledges to resettle Syrian refugees. It’s a country in which no political party has an anti-immigration platform. And it’s a country where the government, after fulfilling its promise to welcome 25,000 Syrians, was forced to extend the program after protests from would-be sponsors who’d already raised hundreds of thousands of dollars and signed leases for homes.

CBC – Back to the Streets: France’s Unimagined and Unimaginable Migrant Crisis

Ten days ago, a dramatic police operation dismantled makeshift camps in the north end of Paris and evacuated an estimated 1,500 from its streets. Within a week, hundreds had returned. […] In May, Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo promised to create two new reception centres in Paris come fall. French President François Hollande’s government has also pledged to create an additional 9,000 places in centres across the country by end of year.It’s all too little, too late, according to Pierre Henry, director of France Terre d’Asile, an NGO that assists asylum seekers applying for refugee status.
