Metro News – Food Handlers Course Encourages Newcomer Cooks in Winnipeg’s Kitchens
Local immigrants in Winnipeg are learning to sautée their way to employment thanks to a free food handlers’ course offered by Food Matters Manitoba. The program, which launched in July and runs once a month, has seen about 75 participants so far and a wait list much longer, according to program coordinator Amy Henderson, who’s looking to expand. If they had room, Food Matters would accept 100 people per session, she said. But they can only take in about 30 at the North Centennial Recreation and Leisure Facility, located at 90 Sinclair St., said instructor Maria Paguiligan.
CBC – Ottawa will Continue Revoking Citizenship of Immigrants Accused of Misrepresentation
Immigrants accused of misrepresenting themselves in order to get into the country will continue having their citizenship revoked, according to court documents sent Friday by the Justice Department. Ottawa will not heed the demands of two civil society groups and impose a moratorium on its practice of citizenship revocation, said lawyer Angela Marinos, in a letter to the Federal Court. The British Columbia Civil Liberties Association (BCCLA) and the Canadian Association of Refugee Lawyers (CARL) launched a constitutional challenge to the federal law because they say there is no proper appeal process.
London Free Press – Pearson: “Illusion of Knowledge” Steers us Wrong

One woman noted that if people responding to the recent polls had been provided the information in advance, the results would likely have proved much different. Perhaps.

Ils se demandent en riant qui cuisinera ce soir-là. Cela pourrait n’être qu’une simple réunion de famille dans le décor bucolique des Alpes françaises, juste au nord de la frontière […].
Like a handful of cities across Canada, Surrey is being redefined by immigration. Its demographics are startling: the latest census data shows that 41 per cent are immigrants, 14 per cent have arrived since 2001. There has been strong growth in recent years from India and the Philippines. Markham, Richmond, Brampton and York are in the same league. This is where the Canada of tomorrow is being born.
Global News – Lack of Canadian References, Experience Causes Barrier for Newcomers at Job Fair
“There are a lot of cases where newcomers are finding it challenging to find a job. Not because of their language skills but because clients don’t have the experience of hiring those from different countries,” said Open Door Society employment counselor Tisham Mohammed. The employment counselor says more often than not the Canadian job won’t match the employee’s skill-set, but there are exceptions.
