Global News – Quebec Community Groups Helping Syrian Refugees Abandoned by Their Sponsors

Many refugees […] were sponsored by private citizens who meant well but didn’t have the means to care for them, according to several community groups interviewed by The Canadian Press. Moreover, these groups and the Quebec government are now looking to what’s known as the “13th month” – when privately sponsored refugees become responsible for their own financial well-being after a year in the province.

Our Windsor – UN Campaign will Feature Canada’s “Unique” Private Sponsorship Program for Refugees

The campaign will feature a number of Syrian refugee families who have settled across Canada over the course of the last year, officials said. The production crew has filmed in Nova Scotia, Ontario and the Yukon, among other places. The goal of the campaign is to promote a unique-in-the-world program that allows Canadian sponsors to apply to bring specific refugees to the country with the understanding that all basic expenses and resettlement support will be provided for one year after their arrival. Hundreds of thousands of refugees have arrived under the program since its creation in 1979.

Government-assisted refugees will drop to 7,500 next year which is well below the 17,437 that have arrived in 2016 and even lower than the 9,411 admitted in 2015 under the Harper government. The Liberal government set a target next year of 16,000 privately sponsored refugees, who are supported financially by relatives in Canada or community groups. There were 12,402 refugees under that category as of October 2016 and 9,745 in 2015.

Global News – Nova Scotia Needs “Bigger Roster of Lawyers” to Tackle Refugee Law, Experts Say

Immigration in Nova Scotia is at a 10-year high. With that comes a whole new set of challenges and demands, one of which is the need for legal services. The Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society is hosting a Refugee Law Workshop on Tuesday with the goal of building a roster of legal professionals who are able to offer pro and low bono services in the area of refugee law. They hope to fill what they refer to as “gaps in the provision of legal services to immigrants and refugees.” According to the Nova Scotia government, 3,418 newcomers arrived in Nova Scotia between January and June of this year. Compared to last year, the province also saw nearly triple the number of refugees in the first few months of 2016 at 1,739.
