Calgary Herald – Calgary Herald Christmas Fund 2016: Refugees find safety, thanks to immigration society

Targeted by the radical group because he is Christian, Darmo knew he and his family needed to find a safer place to live. Someplace far from Syria. One night, he, his wife Nasma and his mother Awikel decided they couldn’t stay any longer. The next morning, they packed their car, loading the couple’s young children, clothing, important papers and jewelry. And they drove to Lebanon, the first stop on their long journey to Canada. They are just one of the 917 refugees privately sponsored by the Calgary Catholic Immigration Society in 2016.

London Free Press – With population growth middling, youth leaving and boomers set to retire, affordable London could use lots more newcomers

We’re good at stepping up in London to help newcomers — so good, we’ve drawn one of the largest groups of Syrian refugees of any Ontario city. Problem is, we’re falling down hanging onto our young, and immigrants who could be the solution are leaving London behind. Crunch the numbers, and the results are sobering for London’s future. Its population growth is mediocre, graduates of its two big schools — Western University and Fanshawe College — usually move away and a big bulge of baby boomers is on the verge of retiring. The antidote is immigrants — lots of them, the kind who start new businesses and drive demand for housing and consumer goods.

Metro News – One year later, many Syrians in Toronto still need assistance, especially with English

As the federal government prepares to cut funding to thousands of Syrian refugees, settlement agencies warn many of them aren’t ready to stand on their own just yet. It’s been one year since Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the federal Liberals welcomed the first of the 25,000 Syrian refugees they pledged to bring to Canada. The anniversary will be bittersweet for many new arrivals; it means government-assisted refugees will no longer receive their monthly living allowance – between $1,200 and $1,400 per family. Those working on the front lines of refugee service in the city say the transition could be a rocky one.

Brandon Sun – Mark My Words — 177,800 reasons to be firing on all cylinders

If it weren’t for immigration, Manitoba would be in decline. In 2015, the population of Manitoba grew by approximately 10,000 people. In that same year, we had nearly 15,000 people immigrate to Canada in Manitoba, while we had a net loss of nearly 5,000 Manitobans to other provinces.
