Government of Canada — 025 Agri-Food Pilot application cap

Farmers and agri-food labourers work hard to produce food for communities in Canada and around the world. Since 2020, the Agri-Food Pilot has helped fill labour gaps in this essential sector by giving experienced agri-food workers the opportunity to become permanent residents. Since the launch of the pilot, Canada has welcomed over 4,500 agri-food workers and family members. That includes close to 1,775 workers and family members last year alone, as of the end of November 2024. Due to high demand, interest in this pilot exceeds the spaces available under the 2025–2027 Immigration Levels Plan. That means that Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is now capping the intake for permanent residence applications under this pilot at 1,010 spaces. Applications can be submitted until the pilot expires on May 14, 2025, or until 1,010 applications have been received—whichever comes first.

National Post — Canada pauses permanent residency sponsorship applications for parents, grandparents

Canada will not accept new parent and grandparent permanent residency sponsorship applications until further notice, according to a ministerial directive. The directive published in the Canada Gazette states the government remains committed to family reunification but will focus on processing applications received last year. According to the directive, it’s Immigration Minister Marc Miller’s opinion that this will “best support” the government’s goals around immigration and family reunification. Other immigration streams have also seen new sponsorships paused in order to help clear the existing backlog. Under the government’s immigration levels plan, which sees an overall decrease in immigration over the next three years, the goal is to admit more than 24,000 people through the parent and grandparent stream this year.

Toronto Star — Approvals for temporary foreign workers continue to rise — will new restrictions finally slow the hiring?

Approvals for temporary foreign workers continue to rise — will new restrictions finally slow the hiring? New rules were introduced by Ottawa in September meant to slow down the hiring of TFWs, though experts don’t expect a decline in numbers anytime soon. Demand for temporary foreign workers across Canada continued to rise last year, and experts don’t expect that to stop anytime soon — despite restrictions to the program introduced in September. Third-quarter numbers from 2024, the most recent data available, show Canada approved 50,971 temporary foreign worker (TFW) positions July through September, up from 50,059 during the same period in 2023, according to figures from Employment and Social Development Canada

CP24 — Toronto’s high housing costs may be pushing immigrants out: report

The number of immigrants who choose to stay in Toronto five years after getting here is declining, Statistics Canada says, and one of the possible reasons why will likely not come as a surprise to most. In a report released last month, the federal agency said it is seeing a “downward trend” in the five-year retention rate of immigrants in the country’s top three urban centres: Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver.
