The Town of Vegreville has extended an invitation to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to visit the central Alberta community and discuss the loss of up to 220 jobs due to the closure of the a federal government office. Back in October it was announced that the Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Case Processing Centre (CPC) in Vegreville, which employs roughly five per cent of the community, will be shut down and relocated to Edmonton.
The Obama administration on Thursday repealed a measure granting automatic residency to virtually every Cuban who arrived in the United States, whether or not they had visas, ending a longstanding exception to U.S. immigration policy. The end of the “wet foot, dry foot” policy, which allowed any Cuban who reached U.S. soil to stay but returned any picked up at sea, is effective immediately. Cuban officials had sought the change for years.

L’Agence des Nations unies pour les réfugiés (HCR) s’est alarmée vendredi du sort des réfugiés et migrants, particulièrement vulnérables face à la vague de froid qui s’est abattue sur une partie de l’Europe. L’agence onusienne exhorte les gouvernements européens à en faire davantage pour les aider et à cesser de les repousser aux frontières ou de les soumettre à des violences.

Un navire de croisière naviguant au large de Key West, en Floride, a repêché samedi un groupe de “balseros”, ces émigrés cubains qui tentent de fuir l’île sur des embarcations de fortune, a annoncé la compagnie. “Le samedi 9 juin, alors que l’Allure of the Seas croisait au large de Key West, il a repéré un petit bateau.
La publication Facebook d’ICI Ontario sur la nomination d’Ahmed Hussen au poste de ministre de l’Immigration, des Réfugiés et de la Citoyenneté a suscité énormément d’intérêt. Elle a atteint plus de 2 millions de personnes et a été relayée plus de 10 000 fois. Cette annonce a suscité beaucoup d’engouement en Europe et en Afrique, mais aussi chez les immigrants au Canada.
