On Tuesday night, the education policy committee of the New Westminster Board of Education recommended approval of a sanctuary schools policy to go forward for a vote on Feb. 28. Toronto Star – Ottawa Should Suspend Refugee Pact with U.S., Harvard Report Says
A growing chorus of legal experts on both sides of the border is calling on Ottawa to suspend a bilateral pact that bans asylum seekers from crossing border for protection, warning the U.S. is unsafe for refugees. A Harvard University Law School review is the latest to warn about the negative impact of President Donald Trump’s executive orders on refugees, and is urging Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to reconsider the Safe Third Country Agreement.
The Guardian – Pilot Program will see 120 Additional Immigrants to Fill P.E.I. Job Vacancies
Prince Edward Island has been given the green light to approve 120 additional immigrant applications this year as part of this pilot, which will admit a total of 2,000 additional immigrants and their families to the Atlantic region, divided on a per capita basis. […] It is an employer-driven program that promises to fast track applications for businesses and shorten the time period for the immigrants to receive their permanent residency.

Canadians may not be as tolerant of refugees and immigrants as they might think, a new study concludes. The study, a project of the McGill Institute for the Study of Canada (MISC), also found that while attitudes among Canadians towards refugees and immigrants range largely from positive to benign, those views are not necessarily strongly held.
CBC – Nova Scotia Boasts of Immigration Jump, but Province Still Short of Goals
Nova Scotia is trumpeting a significant jump in immigration thanks to an influx of refugees, but one business advocate says it’s still falling short of what’s needed. The province’s Immigration Department says preliminary figures for last year to the end of October show 4,835 newcomers — including about 1,500 refugees — arrived in Nova Scotia, saying it’s the highest number in decades.
