New York Times – Losing Hope in U.S., Migrants Make Icy Crossing to Canada

Over the past couple of years, a small number of people have been sneaking across the border at Manitoba from the United States and then filing for asylum, Canadian Border Service Agency statistics show. But since the fall, refugee workers in Winnipeg say, there has been a noticeable surge. The Manitoba Interfaith Immigration Council, known locally as Welcome Place, typically serves 50 to 60 asylum seekers per year, said its executive director, Rita Chahal. “Since April, we’ve seen already 300,” she said.

CBC – Asylum Seekers Fleeing U.S. Face Further Hurdles Here

Ottawa immigration lawyer Jackie Bonisteel of Corporate Immigration Law Firm says it may prove difficult for the newcomers to claim refugee status after arriving from the U.S. Speaking on Ottawa Morning, Bonisteel said the influx is “not all that surprising given what is happening in the U.S., given the talk of completely dismantling the refugee program for even a temporary period of time.” Because Canada is a signatory to the UN Refugee Convention, Bonisteel said, anyone who arrives on Canadian soil to make a refugee claim has a right to do so, and has a right to a hearing before the Immigration and Refugee Board.

Daily Xtra – Trudeau Government Under Fire for Ending LGBT Iranian Refugee Program

The Trudeau government is under increasing pressure to explain why it started turning away LGBT Iranian refugees during the Syrian airlift, ending a program that resettled hundreds of persecuted Iranians through the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). […] Weekly arrivals gradually slowed in late 2015, and by 2016 the UNHCR started referring these Iranians to the United States, which has now barred Iranians from entry following President Donald Trump’s executive order on several predominantly Muslim countries.
