Waterloo Chronicle – Region Sees an Influx of Syrian Families Signing Up For Ontario Works

With hundreds of local Syrian refugees reaching what’s now known as “month 13,” Waterloo Region is seeing an increase in families needing income support from Ontario Works. About 250 Syrian families have signed up for Ontario Works since the fall, as they transition from federal refugee sponsorship that ends after 12 months to provincial assistance that they’re eligible for at 13 months, said Douglas Bartholomew-Saunders, community services commissioner.

Toronto Star – Toronto not Truly a “Sanctuary City,” Report Says

There are posters on the walls of municipal buildings that herald Toronto as a “Sanctuary City.”

But Mary knows better. A Namibian asylum seeker who stayed in Toronto after her refugee application was denied, Mary says she has been asked to leave multiple city-run shelters because she has no immigration papers. […] In 2013, Toronto became the first city in Canada to declare itself a safe haven for people who arrive outside of legal channels. On Jan. 31, Mayor John Tory reaffirmed Toronto’s status as a Sanctuary City, with council’s backing. But a new report by criminologists at Ryerson University states that city hall has never dedicated adequate leadership, planning or funds to follow through with that commitment.

Toronto Star – Immigrant-Rich Miami-Dade Offers no Sanctuary for People Living Illegally in U.S.

The mayor is an immigrant, and more than half its residents are foreign born. But unlike many cities with large numbers of immigrants, there’s no sanctuary for people living illegally in Miami-Dade County, Florida. A recent decision by Mayor Carlos Gimenez requires local authorities to co-operate with federal officials to enforce immigration law. The decree by Cuban-born Gimenez has roiled the area, drawing criticism from the mayors of the cities of Miami and Miami Beach.
