CBC News — Two women fleeing domestic violence sought asylum in Canada. The system treated them very differently

Both are mothers who fled their homeland with their children due to gender-based violence. Both crossed the border into Canada from the U.S. irregularly. Both have ample documentation to back up their claims. Both asked for this country’s protection.  One was welcomed and is building a new life in Canada with her children. The other has been ordered out of the country three times and has been living, with her children, under the threat of deportation for years. It remains uncertain whether she and her family will be allowed to stay. Gender-based violence is one of the top reasons refugees seek asylum in Canada.  A CBC analysis of data on decisions by the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada’s Refugee Protection Division, obtained through an Access to Information request, reveals it was a factor in nearly 40,000 cases decided between Jan. 1, 2018, and March 31, 2024. CBC’s analysis also revealed big differences in the outcomes of domestic violence claims from different countries.

CBC News — Canada’s acceptance of refugee claims has ballooned in last 6 years — more for some countries than others

This story is part of  Welcome to Canada, a CBC News series about immigration told through the eyes of the people who have experienced it. The number of refugee claimants Canada has accepted has more than doubled since 2018. A CBC investigation has found that people from some countries have an easier time claiming asylum than others. The number of refugee claimants granted asylum in Canada was close to 37,000 in 2023, up from just over 14,000 in 2018. The recognition rate, which is determined by the number of accepted refugee claims divided by the total number of claims that have been decided by the Immigration and Refugee Board on merit, also increased to 82 per cent in the first nine months of 2024, from 64 per cent in 2018.

CBC News — Immigrants facing more hostility, says Calgary’s Centre for Newcomers

Amid a charged political debate around immigration in both Canada and the United States, one Calgary organization supporting newcomers says it is seeing a rise in anti-immigrant hate — both online and in person. Kelly Ernst, chief of programs for the Centre for Newcomers, said his team has to monitor social media accounts more closely now to delete a surge of hateful comments and messages targeting immigrants. The Centre for Newcomers is a non-profit organization that offers immigration settlement services and language training for newcomers in Calgary. Last month, the organization posted to Facebook promoting a program supporting vulnerable newcomer women. It received more than 200 comments “that were all hateful and pretty vile,” said Ernst. The centre has since deleted the post. The hostility isn’t happening only online. Ernst said the staff is also seeing it in person, at the organization’s offices in northeast Calgary, where they welcome hundreds of newcomers each day.

Radio-Canada — Majority of immigrants have trouble finding employment matching their expertise: survey

Clare Muruatetu expected to easily land a position in her field after immigrating from Ivory Coast to Edmonton three years ago. But the applications piled up, despite her MBA in project management and previous roles with the United Nations and African Development Bank. It’s a grim reality many hopeful professionals discover after immigrating to Canada only to end up unemployed, underemployed or juggling a patchwork of part-time gigs. In a new CBC/Pollara survey, 54 per cent of surveyed immigrants living in Canada said it was difficult to find a job in their field. A little more than 1,500 adult Canadian residents were surveyed online between Nov. 1 and 18, 2024. They all arrived in Canada in the past 10 years. The poll has a comparable margin of error of about 2.5 per cent.
