Metro News – “Border Rights for Refugees” to Canada Flyer Issued in 17 Languages

As the influx of asylum-seekers from the U.S. under President Donald Trump continues into Canada, migrant advocates in Metro Vancouver have helped create a resource that’s already in high demand south of the border. The two-page “Border rights for refugees” pamphlet has already been distributed to more than 360 organizations across the U.S. and has been snapped up by would-be border-crossers in contact with its creators and those hoping to seek asylum after successfully arriving here.

Vera Institute of Justice Press Release – New York State Becomes First in the Nation to Provide Lawyers for All Immigrants Detained and Facing Deportation

The Vera Institute of Justice and partner organizations today announced that detained New Yorkers in all upstate immigration courts will now be eligible to receive legal counsel during deportation proceedings. The 2018 New York State budget included a grant of $4 million to significantly expand the New York Immigrant Family Unity Project(NYIFUP), a groundbreaking public defense program for immigrants facing deportation that was launched in New York City in 2013.

CBC – As Refugees Pour in, Report Warns Toronto to Back Off Cuts to Shelter Staff

Facing sharp criticism, Mayor John Tory asked staff to study how it would impact service and vowed to re-evaluate the situation once he had the results. That report is here, and city hall sources tell CBC Toronto it’s found there’s been an increasing demand on city shelters in the past eight months. Further, some 20 per cent of those who use them identify themselves as refugees, and 70 per cent of those refugees are families.
