When it comes to healthcare, some are still trying to find a family doctor and many can’t afford a trip to the dentist just yet. But a group of dentists and dental hygienists from Montreal are addressing the need. This weekend they offered a free dental clinic in Ville Saint-Laurent for Syrian refugees, in partnership with the Red Cross.

Doctors Without Borders says the Liberal government must do something about the humanitarian crisis on its doorstep by making asylum easier for refugees fleeing the northern triangle of Central America. The aid group says an estimated 500,000 people from Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala flee into Mexico every year from the three violence-plagued countries, where rates of murder, kidnapping and sexual violence are comparable to those in full-blown war zones.

Guelph businessman Jim Estill couldn’t sit by and do nothing while half a world away, the Syrian civil war and resulting refugee crisis raged on. So the CEO of appliance company Danby decided to sponsor families fleeing the conflict. He started with 50 families, then added a few more. The current tally is 58 families, more than 200 refugees in total. Estill was the keynote speaker at Workforce WindsorEssex’s summit Friday to discuss unemployment and the shortage of people with the skills to fill available jobs.
