Toronto Star – Couples Split by Asylum Outcomes Face Separation

Refugee lawyers say they are seeing a growing number of deportation cases where a failed refugee claimant is being removed from Canada even if the person has a pending permanent residence application with the spouse, who is granted asylum in a separate claim. “Deportation of the spouse or dependant child of a United Nations Convention refugee is a grave violation of international law,” said Raoul Boulakia of the Refugee Lawyers’ Association of Ontario.

CBC News Edmonton – ‘Fear-mongering’: Anti-immigrant Protest at Red Deer School Follows Student Fight

More than 40 demonstrators marched outside Red Deer’s Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School on Tuesday morning as part of an anti-immigration protest. The demonstration was staged after a fight last week involving students from Syria who critics say were unfairly spared punishment by school officials.

Toronto Star – Canadian Universities See Surge of International Students

Enrolment of international students will be sharply higher, universities say, and the incoming freshmen include large numbers of high school students from the United States. Students from outside the U.S. say they are attracted to schools in Canada because of affordable health care, relative safety and the ease of immigration.

Edmonton Journal – Syrian Refugee Teen to Take Part in Epic Sailing Expedition for Canada 150

Nineteen-year-old Abdul Fettah Al Masoud, who arrived in Edmonton with his family last February, is now preparing to embark on another journey. He was chosen to represent Canada as a youth ambassador on “Canada C3,” a 150-day sailing expedition from Toronto to Victoria that follows the Northwest Passage. Three hundred Canadians — including youth, scientists, artists, historians and elders — will visit communities along the route, conduct research and collaborate on artistic projects.

Toronto Star – Ron Atkey Remembered for Response to Vietnamese Refugee Crisis

Ron Atkey was in Cabinet for just nine months but, in that short time, he set Canada on the path to accepting tens of thousands of refugees in need of safe haven. As Minister of Employment and Immigration under Prime Minister Joe Clark, Atkey, who died May 9 at age 75, drastically increased Canada’s intake of “boat people” fleeing war-ravaged Vietnam.
