Global News – Inadmissible: Canada Rejects Hundreds of Immigrants Based on Incomplete Data, Global News Investigation Finds

The Benitez family and other who spoke with Global News say a section of Canada’s immigration act — created to ensure newcomers to the country do not cause “excessive demand” on publicly funded health and social service programs — could prevent them from becoming citizens. In 2017, Immigration Canada set the limit for “excessive demand” at $6,655, the average annual health and social service spending per Canadian in 2016. But information provided to Global News by the Conference Board of Canada, based on public accounts, suggests the government doesn’t account for up to $40 billion in annual social service spending by the provinces when assessing the limit for excessive demand, or roughly $1,105 a year per Canadian. This means the $6,655 limit for excessive demand set by the government should be at least $7,404 if all social service spending in Canada is accurately accounted for.

CBC News – N.W.T. Looks to Immigrants to Address Looming Labour Shortage

At least 28,000 jobs will open in the Northwest Territories within the next 15 years, thanks mostly to the territory’s aging population. On June 30, the Government of the Northwest Territories released a new immigration plan to help address the territory’s potential labour shortage. The five-year strategy is to beef up the existing immigrant nominee program to encourage foreign nationals to settle in the territory, help increase the population, and fill jobs or create new ones. The plan also includes a focus on bringing more francophone immigrants into the nominee program.

Toronto Star – High Number of Women Failing Citizenship Test Reflects Barriers They Face, Advocates Say

According to data obtained under a freedom of information request, far more women than men have their citizenship applications rejected because they are unable to meet the knowledge or language requirements. Although the Liberal government passed a bill this month to relax some of the more stringent citizenship requirements imposed by its Conservative predecessor, critics say the changes fail to address the barriers faced by immigrant women hoping to acquire Canadian citizenship.
