Metro News – Waiting Game ‘Agonizing, Frustrating’ for Refugee Claimants Wanting to Live in Canada

As of March, there were 5,514 so-called “legacy” refugee claimants whose cases haven’t been decided. In September, the board’s legacy task force will embark on a two-year process to decide the remaining claims. To help support legacy claimants through that process, Sebastian Commock founded a new advocacy and support group in March. Four months later, the Canadian Legacy Refugee Advocacy and Alliance (CLRAA) is working to support more than 150 legacy claimants.

Global News – Edmonton Area Program Helps Syrian Refugees Overcome `Barrier of Fear,’ Trauma of Water

A group of Syrian refugees in Edmonton headed out on the lake Saturday to try and tackle a fear of the water. The St. Albert Canoe and Kayak Club held a free program at Kirk Lake for approximately 50 children and 15 adults, all of whom moved to Edmonton after fleeing the civil war in Syria. Many of the refugees have seen boats capsize or know people who have drowned in the Mediterranean Sea while escaping the war.

National Post – Fake Websites Lead to Hundreds of Complaints from Travellers Scammed Before Canada Visits

Visitors to Canada are still getting scammed by fake websites as they apply for mandatory electronic travel authorization, with officials receiving hundreds of complaints in the past year. The National Post reported a year ago almost 500 complaints about unofficial websites had been received since the government began processing electronic travel authorizations (eTAs) in August 2015. The number is now up to almost 950, and immigration officials tell the Post this week there has been “no change” in the status of the problem.

Toronto Star – New Citizenship Study Guide Highlights Indigenous Peoples, Canadian Responsibilities

Respecting treaties with Indigenous Peoples, paying taxes and filling out the census are listed as mandatory obligations of Canadian citizenship in a draft version of a new study guide for the citizenship exam. The working copy obtained by The Canadian Press suggests the federal government has completely overhauled the book used by prospective Canadians to prepare for the test. The current “Discover Canada” guide dates back to 2011 when the previous Conservative government did its own overhaul designed to provide more information on Canadian values and history.
