CBC News – Why a Visit from the Haitian Government has Quebec Immigration Lawyers Worried

Foreign Affairs Minister Antonio Rodrigue and Stéphanie Auguste, the minister for nationals living abroad, met with Mayor Denis Coderre after arriving in Montreal on Tuesday. Jean-Sébastien Boudreault, head of the Quebec Association of Immigration Lawyers, said any contact with the Haitian government could compromise the safety and privacy of those seeking refuge from the country.

Globe and Mail – Canada Welcomes Refugees, but Shuts the Door on Asylum Seekers

Maintaining the “integrity of the immigration system” is in part the shared code language for how our governments (Conservative or Liberal) think about asylum seekers. Canada may love refugees like Syrians who are selected and screened abroad before they set foot in the country, but the same cannot be said about asylum seekers who wash up on our shores in boats, or who walk across our border with the U.S.

CBC News – Montreal Schools Brace for Influx of Asylum Seekers

Monday is the first day asylum seekers who recently arrived in Montreal can sign their children up for school at the city’s largest French-language school board, the Commission scolaire de Montréal (CSDM). The CSDM has experienced a 14 per cent increase in enrolment this year already, the equivalent of a small elementary school’s population.
