CBC News – City Hopes Social Media Inspires Hamiltonians to Be More Welcoming to Immigrants

The Hamilton Immigration Partnership Council and the Hamilton Centre for Civic Inclusion are launching a campaign called #HamiltonForAll, which is an effort to get Hamiltonians trying harder to welcome newcomers. The campaign, which will launch in December, suggests people invite immigrants to backyard barbecues, or talk up newcomers to friends and relatives.

CBC News – RCMP Says it Has Intercepted 3,800 Asylum Seekers Crossing Illegally into Quebec Since Aug. 1

In what the RCMP is calling an “unprecedented” boom in asylum seekers, it says more than 3,800 people crossed the border illegally into Quebec during the two weeks spanning Aug. 1 to Aug. 15. The figures were released after RCMP held a technical briefing Thursday with the Canada Border Services Agency and Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.

BBC News – Number of Asylum Seekers to Canada Up Four Fold in August

Over 3,800 migrants crossed illegally into the Canadian province of Quebec in the first two weeks of August. That is well over four times the number of asylum seekers that arrived in Quebec from the United States in the month of June.

CBC News – Immigration Board to Audit Long-Term Detention Process After ‘Endless Circle Of Mistakes’

The Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada says it will carry out an independent audit of the process used to reassess the long-term detention of permanent residents and foreigners after two recent court decisions raised concerns that the rules may not always be applied fairly. The audit will be completed this fall and delve into detention reviews from closed files, the board said. The results will eventually be made public and taken into account as the board revises its guidelines on detention, it said.

More than 3,300 people have pledged to come out to a protest against a nationalist anti-immigration rally being held in Toronto next month, a wave of support that vastly outnumbers those who have indicated they will attend the controversial event.
