The steady upswing in foreign applicants began several years ago, then started to spike after the U.S. presidential election in 2016. The challenge for the Canadian government now is to maintain that trend amid competing countries, and to encourage more from the talented pool to stay on as permanent residents.

A United Nations committee has urged Ottawa to limit the use of immigration detention and drop a bilateral pact that turns asylum-seekers back at the U.S. land border. The UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination makes the recommendations in its recent review of how Canada’s government policies and programs are affecting minority groups.

Omar Rahimi is saddened by a recent spike in racist comments on the Facebook page for Hire A Refugee, a non-profit organization he runs. Through Hire a Refugee, he connects newcomers who speak little or no English with odd jobs to earn money while they try to settle their families in Winnipeg. His group is calling on the premier, and leadership hopefuls for the Liberals and NDP, to make meaningful steps to deal with the issue of racism and hateful attacks on immigrants in Manitoba.

A tent city erected in Cornwall, Ont. was never used, and that city’s conference centre is emptying of its temporary residents as the flow of illegal migrants into Canada ebbs. However, the federal government is trying to pre-empt another such crisis flaring up in winter by stepping up its south-of-the-border outreach, and looking into acquiring heated trailers.
