Global News – Man Denied Citizenship After 27 Years in Canada Offered Second Chance to Earn It

Kuiper’s family immigrated to Canada from the Netherlands more than three decades ago. He was only 14 months old at the time. He grew up in the town of Aylmer, near London, Ont. and lived the Canadian experience over 27 years, attending school, working, paying taxes and making friends here before pursuing a Master’s degree, and eventually finding work and settling in Europe. Kuiper applied for Canadian citizenship in 2013, only to be denied two years later because he hadn’t spent a total of at least four of the six years previous to his application in the country.

CBC News – New School Program Helps Young Newcomers Feel Comfortable in Class

The Functional Language Program offers beginner-level English to newcomer students to help them more easily integrate into the school system and communicate with their peers. The program is offered at several schools in Charlottetown and Stratford and lasts between four and six weeks. Though some students arrive shy, it doesn’t take them long to open up and have fun learning the basics, says Valentina Malysheva, a teacher in the program.
