Toronto Star – Quebec to Vote on Bill that Would Bar Face-Coverings for Those Receiving Public Services

After a decade-long debate about the place of religion in a secular society, Quebec is set to pass a law that would bar public servants from wearing face coverings and oblige ordinary citizens to unveil when seeking access to government services. The proposed law has been vigorously opposed by Muslim advocacy groups in the province who say that it will unfairly target women who wear Islamic face coverings such as the niqab, which leaves only the eyes uncovered.

CBC News – Liberals Prepare to Reveal 2018 Immigration Plan They Say Will Boost Economy, Help Refugees

The Liberal government is finalizing its 2018 immigration plan, aiming to strike the right balance amid a global migration crisis, a surge in illegal border-crossers and persistent labour gaps across the country.

Immigration Minister Ahmed Hussen recently wrapped up cross-country consultations and is preparing to table the annual immigration levels in the House of Commons by the Nov. 1 deadline. As he sets next year’s target for the number of newcomers allowed into the country, the government’s goal is to attract top talent in a competitive global market while reuniting families and offering refuge to people displaced by disaster and conflict.

Globe and Mail – Talent Finds a Fast Track to Canadian Startups

A pilot project that allows high-growth companies to bring in foreign talent more easily has been working remarkably well since its June launch, say firms and applicants who have taken advantage of the federal initiative. Toronto startup founder Yishay Waxman, for example, calls the federal government’s global skills visa program the “best thing that happened to my company.” Mr. Waxman’s company, Platterz, used the program to bring in three specialized foreign workers to help the catering service scale up its business.

Montreal Gazette – RCMP Reins in Quebec Division Responsible for Questionnaire Given to Refugees

The RCMP has chastised its Quebec division for a questionnaire given to refugee claimants coming from the United States, which among other things asked them how they felt about working for women and how many times per day they prayed. On Friday, the RCMP put out a statement saying the Quebec RCMP was not authorized to produce and use the questionnaire. It has since been revised, taking out three of the questions, and a new guide is being produced that will comply with the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, the principles of equality and non-discrimination and the values of the RCMP.
