CBC News – ‘An Issue that Pulls at the Heartstrings’: MPs Review Rules that Reject Immigrants on Medical Grounds

Members of Parliament are reviewing the rules that reject immigrants because they could be a drain on Canada’s social services and health-care system. As it stands, applicants can be refused if their condition is a potential danger to public health or safety, or if immigration officers believe they could cause “excessive demand” on the system. Determinations are based on whether anticipated costs are expected to exceed the average Canadian per-capita health or social services costs over a five-year period, or if they could add to an existing waiting list that might delay care for Canadian citizens or permanent residents.

City News – Woman Arrested for Allegedly Defrauding Would-Be Canadian Immigrants

Police have laid fraud charges against a Mississauga woman who they allege scammed would-be refugees out of thousands of dollars. Sixty-one-year-old Sakia Mojadiddi, who heads a charity organization called Afghan Refugee Relief, faces three counts of fraud over $5000 and three counts of possession of proceeds obtained by crime. Peel police allege at least three victims paid Mojadiddi for services, but she never processed their paperwork with Citizenship and Immigration Canada, and refused to reimburse the funds, amounting to $40,000.

CBC News – How Quebec’s Face-Covering Ban Stacks Up to Laws Elsewhere Around the Globe

Quebec’s new law on religious neutrality prohibits anyone from receiving or giving public services with their face covered, making it the first place in North America to effectively ban face veils in public places.

Bill 62, passed Wednesday in Quebec’s National Assembly, means Muslim women who wear a niqab or burka have to uncover their faces to access health services, attend school, and ride a public bus or Metro. Quebec is not the only place in the world to restrict face coverings in the public sphere.

CBC News – ‘I’ll Never Stop Fighting’ Says Kitchener Rohingya Man After 2-Week Stint in Bangladesh Camps

Ahmed Ullah, a Kitchener, Ont. Resident, spent two weeks helping Rohingya refugees in camps near Cox’s Bazar, a city and fishing port in south-eastern Bangladesh. A Rohingya himself, Ullah says the experience was a horrifying nightmare, far worse than the 15 years he spent in refugee camps before moving to Canada in 2009. Sitting near the arrivals gate at Pearson Airport after returning to Canada on Friday night, the 24-year-old says he’s on a mission to expose the plight of his fellow Rohingya Muslim refugees, members of a long-persecuted religious minority who are fleeing Myanmar.
