CBC News – Funding Uncertainty Could Stall LGBT Refugee Resettlement, Advocates Say
The Liberal government says it’s committed to bringing more LGBT refugees to Canada, but advocates say funding uncertainty, lengthy processing and lack of specialized training for visa officers are threatening resettlement efforts. Next year, Canada will bring in about 43,000 refugees, among them lesbian, gay, transgender and other people facing persecution based on sexual orientation. Sharalyn Jordan, chair of the B.C-based Rainbow Refugee, said lives are at risk in nearly 80 countries which outlaw certain sexual orientation.
Globe and Mail – After Syria Initiative, UN Looks to Canada as a Refugee Haven
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees will ask Ottawa to consider a special program to bring in more refugees similar to the Syria initiative of two years ago when he meets the Prime Minister on Monday. But this time, rather than concentrating on one hot spot, UNHCR Filippo Grandi will suggest to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau that Canada take on an expanded effort to bring in especially vulnerable groups, such as women. Mr. Grandi praised Canada as a “very strong” advocate for refugees, but expressed disappointment at the modest growth in targets for refugee resettlement the federal government recently announced.

But the plan released this week by the federal government proposes no increase in the number of refugees Canada will accept through the UN in 2018. Canada’s plan was met with disappointment by refugee advocates who accuse the Liberals of seeking to privatize the country’s commitments to refugees.
