Global News – Canada Deporting Fewer People for Terrorism, War Crimes, Crime

The number of foreign citizens deported for security, crime, organized crime and international human rights abuses has dropped by about a third since 2014, according to Canada Border Services Agency figures. During that same period, the number awaiting deportation on those grounds has more than doubled to 1,164. They include 20 ordered deported on security grounds and 35 for organized crime.

Toronto Star – A Syrian Man Gave $120,000 to Canada to Migrate Here. Then He Died. Now his Family Is Out of Luck

Elias Sabee applied for the Quebec Immigrant Investor Program in 2008. He invested $120,000 in cash into the province’s economy through Desjardins Trust Inc., an intermediary, and took out a loan to finance the balance of the required $400,000 total to meet the threshold of the immigration program in exchange for permanent residency. Then the waiting began. That ended last November when Sabee was killed in a bombing. Now his wife and three grown children — all refugees in limbo across France and Germany — are fighting to get a refund on his investment in Canada after immigration officials rejected the family’s application because the principal applicant is no longer alive.

Globe and Mail – Ottawa Analyzing Implications for Canada if U.S. DACA Program Ends

An internal government analysis of U.S. immigration policy suggests significant implications for Canada if a program offering protections for people who came to the U.S. illegally as children is allowed to end. Large numbers of what are known as the “Dreamers” don’t have strong ties to their birth countries, given they’ve lived in the U.S. for years, so Canada could be a draw, the analysis said. Which isn’t entirely a negative proposition, the analysis suggested. Many recipients work in white-collar jobs and since the program only applies to those who at least have finished high school, they are more educated than other unauthorized migrant populations.
