CBC News – UNB Project Devoted to Immigrant Retention Gets Big Cash Infusion

This week, the provincial and federal governments announced a combined $400,000 in funding to NouLAB, a joint venture of the Pond-Deshpande Centre and the New Brunswick Social Policy Research Network, to pay for the costs of running the Economic Immigration Lab project. The project is a “social innovation lab” that brings together stakeholders from every sector, including public and private sector officials, academics and immigrants themselves, to brainstorm ideas to increase immigrant retention.

Toronto Star – ‘Help Newcomers Feel at Home’: P.E.I. Plans to Boost Population Through Immigration

Prince Edward Island — Canada’s smallest but fastest-growing province — is promising measures to get more immigrants to come, and stay. The Island’s population topped 152,000 this year, and the government has set the goal of reaching 160,000 by 2022. “My government has set ambitious targets for near and long-term population growth,” the government said in its throne speech, read by Lt.-Gov. Antoinette Perry Tuesday as she opened the fall session of the legislature.

Rebekah Robinson is among the latest wave of international students—a record 414,285 in 2016 and double the volume in 2009—choosing Canada for post-secondary studies. The growth continued this year, with some institutions up sharply. “This is Canada’s global moment,” says Paul Davidson, president of Universities Canada, citing a “confluence of factors that gives up huge opportunities right now.” Schools are now engaging in a mix of aggressive promotion and specialized programming for international students as they compete in the intense, global competition for top students.

La Presse – Où sont passés les immigrants francophones?

Le plus récent plan d’immigration du Québec révèle que le taux d’immigrants francophones a chuté au cours des cinq dernières années. Il est passé de 62 % à 42 %. Ça signifie, en gros, que six nouveaux arrivants sur dix maîtrisaient le français il y a cinq ans, contre quatre sur dix actuellement.
