Every year at this time, the Ottawa Mennonite Church holds a fair trade Christmas market, with proceeds going to the Ottawa Food Bank. This year, one group of volunteers has a special reason for wanting to give back. They’re members of a Syrian family who arrived in Canada as refugees over the last three years, and they wanted to say thank you to the congregation that sponsored them to come here, and has supported them since.

CBC News – Refugee Shelter in Gretna, Man. Closing Due to Lack of Demand

A temporary shelter for asylum-seekers in Gretna, Man. is closing due to a decrease in the number of people crossing the border. “The Manitoba government is relocating asylum seeker delivery services from the temporary reception centre in Gretna to existing offices in Winnipeg,” a provincial spokesperson said in a statement.

Global News – North Korean Defectors in Toronto Worried They May Be Deported: ‘They Treat Us Like Garbage’

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada sent 150 letters to people of North Korean origin in late October, saying the government had concerns about their applications for permanent residency. If these people’s applications for permanent residency are denied, they could face deportation to South Korea.
