Globe and Mail – Illegal Border Crossings Continued to Decline in November

A decision by the Trump administration to yank protected status for thousands of Haitians doesn’t appear to have prompted a new surge of asylum seekers at the Canada-U.S. border. Data published Tuesday show the RCMP stopped 1,623 people in November, down from 1,890 in October. Still, while the number of border crossers is down, the number of people stopped in just those two months is more than the RCMP stopped in all of 2016, suggesting a major outreach effort by the Liberals hasn’t entirely stemmed the tide.

New York Times – As Trump Tightens Legal Immigration, Canada Woos Tech Firms

In April, President Trump introduced an executive order, Buy American and Hire American, which included requests to reform a visa program known as H-1B to benefit American workers. Between application and legal fees, the process of applying for one H-1B visa can cost a company up to $6,000, lawyers say, and can take months; it is also as uncertain as roulette. In contrast, Canada’s immigration agency in June started the Global Skills Strategy for high-skilled workers from abroad to get a work permit in two weeks.

CBC News – Inadmissible: Grandfather’s Immigration Bid Hindered by Past

For a decade, Faisal Arif has relentlessly pursued one goal — to bring his aging parents from Bangladesh to Ottawa, where he lives with his wife and two children. He’s still waiting, thanks to a section of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act that forbids his 65-year-old father from setting foot in Canada.

Whether that’s justified is very much a matter of perspective: while Taufiqul Arif is regarded as a hero and humanitarian in his homeland, Canada has labelled the elder Arif a security threat.

CBC News – Fort McMurray Woman Fined $10K for Helping People with Immigration Applications

A Fort McMurray woman who pleaded guilty to accepting money in exchange for helping people with their immigration applications has been fined $10,000. Charie Santos pleaded guilty to one charge under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act in September. According to an agreed statement of facts, 13 people said they paid Santos to help with applications for work permits and permanent residency papers.
