Globe and Mail – How One Question in Census 2016 Halved Canada’s Jewish Population

According to the long-form census, the most reliable population measurement tool in the country, Canada’s Jewish population declined from about 309,000 in 2011 to a little more than 143,000 in 2016. The source of the problem is question 17 on the long-form census: “What were the ethnic or cultural origins of this person’s ancestors?” The difference was that in 2011, for the first time, Jewish did not rank among the 20 most common answers.

CBC News – N.L. Should Bring in More Foreign Entrepreneurs, Says St. John’s Board of Trade

With Newfoundland and Labrador’s population in decline, the St. John’s Board of Trade says it’s time for the province to change its immigration rules. Board chair Dorothy Keating said while the provincial government has taken some steps toward attracting new immigrants, the board would like to see the creation of an entrepreneur category to its immigrant nominee program so that the province can bring in business owners from other countries. Under the current program, people must be sponsored with a job in the province to apply for immigration.

CBC News – Former Refugee Board Chair Says 1 Year Not Enough for Some Refugees to Find Employment

A former chair of Canada’s immigration and refugee board, Peter Showler, says government sponsored refugees often can’t find gainful employment before their 12-month sponsorship runs out. In an interview with Ottawa Morning, Showler said the biggest barrier to finding work, and integrating into Canadian life, is language. “They can’t get enough language skills within the 12 months to find work that would support a family of five, six or seven.”
