CBC News – Premier Commits to Review Cases of Kids in Protective Care Without Citizenship

Nova Scotia will be reviewing the cases of children who are in the care of the province and don’t have citizenship, Premier Stephen McNeil said Tuesday as the province is being criticized for its handling of the case of Abdoul Abdi. “There will be a complete review of not only this case, but any cases that would require the kind of support that … I’m hearing about with this particular gentleman,” said McNeil, who didn’t specify what exactly the review would do.

Reuters – Canada Telling Salvadorans Facing U.S. Exit That Haven Isn’t Guaranteed

Canada is sending a Spanish-speaking lawmaker to California to dissuade potential migrants from illegally crossing the border following Washington’s decision to end the temporary protected status of some 200,000 Salvadorans. The trip was planned in anticipation of Monday’s decision by U.S. President Donald Trump and is part of a Canadian government attempt to prevent an influx of border-crossers like the one that occurred last year after the United States said it would end the temporary protected status of some 50,000 Haitians.

Winnipeg Free Press – Another Border Crosser Suffers Frostbite While Getting to Manitoba

For the third time, a refugee claimant crossing into Canada on foot at the Manitoba border near Emerson has suffered serious frostbite. On Thursday night, after paying US$700 to a driver to bring him from Minneapolis, 36-year-old Kangni Kouevi said he was left on the side of the road and pointed in the direction of Canada. The man from the African country of Togo was wearing good boots, which saved his feet; however, he suffered frostbite on his hands during his walk across the border.

CBC News – ‘We Are Not Being Complacent’: Liberals Don’t Expect Sudden Surge of Salvadoran Asylum-Seekers

The Liberal government has a contingency plan for a potential flood of Salvadoran asylum seekers, but it is not expecting a sudden surge of people crossing the border from the United States. Immigration Minister Ahmed Hussen said the government has been “engaging intensely” with the El Salvador diaspora, among others, and believes they are deeply embedded in their American communities with children, jobs and mortgages and not likely to abruptly flee.

CBC News – Abdoul Abdi’s Supporters Protest His Possible Deportation at Trudeau Town Hall

A 23-year-old former refugee from Somalia waited in a segregated cell Tuesday night as about two dozen of his supporters called attention to his case at the prime minister’s town hall in Lower Sackville, N.S. Abdoul Abdi came to Nova Scotia at the age of six but spent much of his childhood in the care of the province and shuffled among foster homes. The Department of Community Services never applied for him to become a Canadian citizen, and he’s now facing possible deportation because of his criminal past, according to his lawyer.
